ASTM F406

ASTM F406 is the consumer safety specification for non-full-size baby cribs and play yards — the foldable, travel and bedside sleep-and-play spaces, distinct from full-size cribs. It sets requirements and tests for side height, latches and locking, floor strength, mattress fit, and the entrapment and suffocation hazards that repeatedly drive recalls in this category. It is incorporated by reference into the CPSC's mandatory play-yard rule (16 CFR 1221).

What it does not mean

Meeting F406 does not make a product a safe place for sleep. The standard does not override the advice that babies should sleep alone, on their back, on a firm, flat surface. An inclined sleeper can pass this standard and still be one the CPSC later recalls for infant deaths — the two questions are not the same.
