FSC certification
Forest Stewardship Council chain-of-custody certification for wood. Relevant to wooden toys and nursery furniture.
FSC certifies that wood comes from forests managed to its environmental and social standards, and tracks it through a chain of custody to the finished product. For wooden toys and cribs it's the most widely recognised sourcing claim, and certificate holders are listed in a public database.
What it does not mean
FSC is a forestry and sourcing standard. It says nothing about finishes, glues, or coatings — the things most relevant to a child who will put the toy in their mouth. For that, look for EN 71-3 or ASTM F963 testing on the finished article. Watch the label wording too: "FSC Mix" and "FSC Recycled" carry different meanings from "FSC 100%".
