GOTS
Global Organic Textile Standard. Certifies organic fibre content plus environmental and labour criteria through the whole supply chain — and it's publicly verifiable.
GOTS certifies textiles containing at least 70% certified organic fibre, and covers far more than the fibre itself: restricted inputs at every processing stage, wastewater treatment, and social criteria based on ILO core conventions. Certification is annual and carried out by accredited third-party bodies.
Its practical advantage is public verifiability. GOTS maintains a searchable database of certified operators, so you can check a company's certificate yourself rather than trusting a logo on a label.
What it does not mean
Certification attaches to the certified operator and product scope — not to everything a brand sells. A company with GOTS certification may also sell uncertified lines. "GOTS certified cotton" and "made with organic cotton" are very different claims, and only the first is auditable.
