The ST (Safety Toy) Mark is the Japan Toy Association's toy-safety certification scheme, in place since 1971. Toys for babies and toddlers sold in Japan are typically ST-certified, meaning a designated institute tested them against the JTA's ST standards — covering mechanical and physical properties, flammability and chemical safety — alongside Japan's Food Sanitation Act limits for articles a child will mouth.
What it does not mean
ST Mark is a voluntary industry scheme, not a government requirement, and it does not cover every children's article: clothing and feeding equipment fall under other Japanese rules. Certification also does not follow the product forever — it covers the tested article and its production run, not future variants.
